Listed under UN/LOCODE MA NNA and historically known as Port Lyautey, Kenitra is Morocco's only river port, set some 17 kilometres up the Sebou from the Atlantic. A shallow approach channel of only about 3.4 metres limits traffic to smaller coasters; the port traditionally handles agricultural produce such as citrus and vegetables, fish, timber and lead and zinc ores, with the Mehdia outer port focused on fish exports. Road and rail tie it into the hinterland and the Casablanca–Tangier corridor. For container services, deeper-draft vessels and full customs clearance, Casablanca and Tanger Med are the relevant alternatives. Kenitra itself remains a specialised river and fishing port with limited container relevance.
