A refinery wharf, an LNG terminal and tanker berths at neighbouring Nikiski (East Foreland) define cargo activity at Kenai, on Cook Inlet about 100 km southwest of Anchorage, Alaska. Marathon's Kenai refinery processes roughly 68,000 barrels a day of Alaska North Slope and Cook Inlet crude into fuels, asphalt and propane. The Kenai LNG terminal, once among the first LNG export plants in the United States, is being repurposed to import natural gas for the Southcentral Alaska market. Commercial salmon fishing adds seasonal traffic, but there is no scheduled container terminal. Cook Inlet's large tides and shallow stretches impose particular navigational demands on tankers and supply vessels. For containerised imports and routine customs clearance, shippers rely on the Port of Alaska in Anchorage.
