Few northern Baltic ports are as tightly bound to a single industry as Kemi, whose throughput rises and falls with Finnish forestry. Cargo concentrates at the Ajos section, with four piers, eleven berths, RoRo and side-loading capability and depths of 8.7 to 11.4 metres, moving containers, forest-industry products and bulk such as roundwood, paper fillers and scrap iron. The separate Veitsiluoto harbour, with seven berths, chiefly serves the adjacent Stora Enso paper mill, while an oil harbour forms part of Ajos. The start-up of Metsä Fibre's bioproduct mill concentrated exports through Ajos, where a new 37,000 m² product warehouse was built. International throughput reaches about 1.9 million tonnes a year, exports slightly outweighing imports. Rail and road tie the port into northern Finland and the Barents region, while shippers needing year-round ice-free deep-sea container services turn to HaminaKotka or Helsinki.
