Unlike its container-focused neighbours Yokohama and Tokyo, Kawasaki earns its keep as one of Japan's heavyweight industrial and energy ports, moving around 86 million tonnes a year. Sitting in the Keihin industrial belt on the western shore of Tokyo Bay, its trade is dominated by petroleum, chemicals, steel, coal and LNG feeding the surrounding refineries and mills. At Higashi-Ohgishima the utility TEPCO also runs a major LNG import terminal. Container traffic runs mainly through the Higashi-Ohgishima terminal but stays modest next to the box volumes handled just along the coast. For forwarders, Kawasaki is therefore best understood as a port for bulk, liquid and industrial project cargo rather than routine container shipments. Road and rail links into the Greater Tokyo network give excellent hinterland reach. Containerised consignments for the region are usually cleared through Yokohama or Tokyo instead.
