Where most Black Sea trade moves by deep-sea ship, Port Kavkaz on the Chushka Spit built its role on rail, road and water combined — it was once the eastern terminal of the rail-and-vehicle ferry across the Kerch Strait to Crimea. Today the port centres on crude and light oil products, lube oils and petrochemicals, together with ship-to-ship transhipment at anchor, partly in the port and partly some 20 nautical miles south of the strait. It also handles RoRo/ferry traffic, bagged mineral fertiliser and other packaged cargo. Capacity is modest: vessels up to about 130 m length, 14.5 m beam and 5 m draft, so Kavkaz suits feeder and coastal tonnage rather than large ocean carriers. Ice-free year-round, it links the Sea of Azov with the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. Crucially for planners, it sits in the sanctioned, conflict-affected Kerch Strait area and has been targeted in military strikes, with direct consequences for insurance, routing and customs status. For container needs, shippers use Novorossiysk or nearby Taman instead.
