Some 55 million tonnes of cargo move through Kashima each year, almost all of it tied to the heavy-industry belt the port was built to serve. Opened in 1969 and operated by Ibaraki Prefecture, this artificial harbour stretches about 17 kilometres along the Pacific coast north-east of Tokyo, lined with steel mills and petrochemical plants. Raw materials – iron ore, coal and crude oil – arrive for processing, while finished steel and chemicals ship out. Oil berths allow drafts of up to 19 metres and vessels of 300,000 dwt; in 2014 the Vale Brasil became the first very large ore carrier to call, serving Nippon Steel. Principal facilities include the North and South Public Wharves, Fukashiba Wharf and the Ammonia Quay. Container traffic is minor, so shippers needing box services should look to Tokyo or Yokohama.
