Roughly 3 million tonnes of cargo move across Karwar each year, a figure set to rise to about 4.5 million tonnes under India's Sagarmala port-modernisation programme. This all-weather intermediate port on the Karnataka coast is primarily a bulk and breakbulk facility, served by lighters alongside fixed cargo berths. Exports centre on iron and manganese ore, granite, phosphoric and hydrochloric acid and marine products, while imports include fertiliser, rock phosphate, industrial salt and timber. Container handling is marginal and not consistently confirmed, so shippers should not assume regular box services here. Operations largely pause during the monsoon from May to September. For containerised or higher-volume freight, Mormugao in Goa to the north and New Mangalore to the south are the practical alternatives.
