Liquefied gas rather than containers defines Karsto (NO KAR), the international spelling of the Kårstø plant at Tysvær on Norway's North Sea coast. The facility is Europe's largest gas-processing plant and at the same time the continent's biggest export port for natural gas liquids, and the third largest worldwide. Rich gas piped in from around 30 North Sea fields – among them Åsgard, Mikkel and Sleipner – is split here into methane, ethane, propane, butane, naphtha and condensate; NGL capacity runs at about 10 million tonnes a year, shipped out via roughly 500 tanker calls annually. The plant is operated by the state grid operator Gassco, with Equinor as technical service provider. An open roadstead with water depths around 23 m allows large gas and product tankers to load, while the cargo pier sits at about 11 m. For forwarders the point is clear: Karsto is an energy and tanker port with no container or conventional general-cargo traffic. For boxes or project cargo in the Rogaland region, Stavanger and the Risavika container terminal are the places to use.
