Liquid packaging board and market pulp outbound, roundwood and woodchips inbound: the cargo mix at Karskär (SE KAS), near Bomhus south of Gävle, follows the needs of a single mill. The port functions mainly as the captive harbour of Billerud's Gävle works on the Gulf of Bothnia, a plant tracing back to Korsnäs's 1899 move to the coast and today among the world's leading makers of board for beverage and food cartons. Forest products therefore dominate, handled largely as breakbulk and project cargo rather than in containers. There are no established third-party container, reefer or general cargo services, and inland links run by rail and road toward Gävle and the Swedish core network. Commercial multipurpose and container traffic in the region is handled by the immediately adjacent Port of Gävle and its container terminal.
