For freight-forwarding purposes Karluk (US KYK), on the west coast of Kodiak Island, has very limited commercial relevance. The Alutiiq village of roughly 27 residents receives general supplies by barge from Seattle, Anchorage or Kodiak, but there is no commercial cargo quay, container handling or customs facility. Around 1900 the settlement was famous for what was then the world's largest salmon cannery; today it is an open roadstead at the mouth of the Karluk River with no terminal infrastructure. Shippers serving the region should use the nearest commercial port, Kodiak, about 140 km to the northeast.
