First and foremost Karlsborg (SE KXV) is a works port: sitting just outside Kalix in northern Sweden on the Gulf of Bothnia, it exists to serve Billerud's paper mill, the northernmost in the world. The cargo is overwhelmingly forest products – kraft paper, sack paper, the mouldable FibreForm grade and bleached market pulp, together around 350,000 tonnes a year. Timber, the mill's raw material, arrives largely by road (some 130 log trucks on peak days), so the harbour chiefly handles the mill's outbound shipments and inbound process chemicals. With a berth depth of only about 4.9 m and a far-northern location that freezes over in winter and depends on icebreaker support, Karlsborg is not a container or general-cargo port for the open market, and its commercial freight relevance beyond the mill traffic is limited. Forwarders moving containers or conventional break-bulk in Norrbotten use the much larger port of Luleå, or alternatively Piteå.
