Roughly 300,000 tonnes of paper a year, produced by about 400 employees, set the rhythm at Karlsborg (SE KXV) — a works port rather than a commercial one. It sits just outside Kalix in northern Sweden on the Gulf of Bothnia and exists to serve Billerud's mill, the northernmost paper mill in the world. The cargo is overwhelmingly forest products: kraft paper, sack paper, the mouldable FibreForm grade and bleached market pulp. Timber, the mill's raw material, arrives largely by road (some 130 log trucks on peak days), so the harbour chiefly handles the mill's outbound shipments and inbound process chemicals. The Kalix port area has two quays — one used by Billerud Karlsborg, the other, the former sawmill quay, requiring dredging, renovation and extension before it can be brought back into service, a project the municipality frames as part of Norrbotten's green industrial shift. With a berth depth of only about 4.9 m and a far-northern location that freezes over in winter and depends on icebreaker support, Karlsborg is not a container or general-cargo port for the open market. Forwarders moving containers, customs-cleared break-bulk or conventional cargo in Norrbotten use the much larger port of Luleå some 100 km to the south-west, or alternatively Piteå.
