Around 21.5 million tonnes a year of rated capacity make Karaikal Port a focused dry-bulk operation on India's Bay of Bengal coast, in the union territory of Puducherry. Commissioned in 2009 and owned by the Adani group since 2023, the all-weather port offers five berths with drafts up to 14.5 metres, enough for Panamax vessels. Coal, cement, fertiliser, limestone, steel and liquids form the core trade, supported by roughly one million tonnes of LNG capacity; actual throughput was about 10 million tonnes in FY 2022/23. Containers are not yet part of the port's profile, though a multipurpose expansion with a box terminal has been announced. Road and rail link the port to the Tamil Nadu hinterland. Shippers moving containers should default to Chennai, with Kamarajar (Ennore) a further bulk and ro-ro option.
