Two privately run container terminals – KICT under Hutchison and PICT under ICTSI – give Karachi (PK KHI) the lion's share of Pakistan's container trade. Their combined container capacity is around 3.3 million TEU a year; in fiscal year 2024/25 the port handled roughly 54 million tonnes of cargo and about 2.65 million TEU across containers, dry bulk, liquid bulk and general cargo. A natural setting on the Arabian Sea with an approach channel about 16 m deep lets large container vessels call. Both terminals were built on a build-operate-transfer basis and are fitted with ship-to-shore gantries, rubber-tyred gantry cranes and straddle carriers. Hinterland access runs via the N-5 national highway, the M-9 motorway towards Hyderabad and rail links into Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and – under the Afghan transit trade agreement (APTTA) – onward to Afghanistan. Customs clearance is handled electronically through the WeBOC system of Pakistan Customs. Within the metropolitan area, nearby Port Qasim handles much of the dry and liquid bulk, while the developing deep-sea port of Gwadar is the longer-term alternative.
