In the 19th century Karabane (Carabane), at the mouth of the Casamance River, was a colonial trans-shipment point: the first administrative capital of Casamance from 1836, the island gained a roughly 116-metre quay with a rail pier around 1840 for the largest ships then entering the river. That role is long gone; the population has shrunk since the Second World War, and Carabane is today a heritage-listed island and tourist village with no UN/LOCODE and no commercial cargo activity. Its shallow approach of about 3.4 metres admits only small craft in any case. Freight in this region moves instead through the river port of Ziguinchor further inland or the main port of Dakar.
