About five nautical miles up from the mouth of the Schlei lies Kappeln, a fishing town on the Schlei inlet in Schleswig-Holstein. Today it is shaped by guest harbours, marinas such as Ancker Yachting and Grauhöft, and traditional yards offering boatbuilding, engine and yacht services, with an excursion vessel running on the Schlei. With a channel of only around 1.8 metres and a quay depth in the same range, Kappeln is geared to leisure boating, fishing and tourism rather than commercial breakbulk, container or bulk traffic. Such shipments are handled at the Baltic ports of Kiel or Flensburg.
