Rubber and tin once made Kantang on the Trang River one of southern Thailand's leading ports; Trang was where Thai rubber cultivation began in 1899. Little of that remains today: tin is no longer shipped, and the region's rubber moves in containers through Songkhla or Butterworth in Malaysia. With a channel of only about 1.8 metres, the shallow river port, run by the Municipality of Kantang, is limited to small coastal and local traffic and has little relevance for international container or bulk shipments. Freight in Trang province is better routed through Songkhla on the Gulf coast or the container services via Penang/Butterworth.
