Opened in 1950 alongside the local cement works and badly damaged during Sri Lanka's civil war, Kankesanthurai (KKS) on the Jaffna peninsula currently offers only limited commercial cargo capability. The roughly 16-acre port long sat under naval control and is surrounded by small industry, including cement, agricultural processing and fisheries. An Indian grant of about USD 61.5 million is funding a new breakwater and dredging to as much as 30 metres so the harbour can eventually take deep-draft vessels. A fast ferry already links KKS with Nagapattinam and Karaikal in Tamil Nadu, around 110 kilometres across the strait. For containers and breakbulk, forwarders still rely on Colombo, and on Trincomalee on the east coast for larger bulk volumes.
