Coal, bulk and bagged fertilisers, iron-ore concentrate, pipes, salt, broken stone and scrap metal make up the working cargo mix at Kandalaksha, a multipurpose dry-cargo port at the head of Kandalaksha Bay in Russia's White Sea. Founded in 1915 and located in the Murmansk region, the port handles roughly 2.5 million tonnes a year. It can accommodate vessels up to about 200 metres in length and around 37,000 dwt, and stays open year-round with icebreaker assistance typically from mid-January to the end of April. Inland connections run mainly by rail to the Murmansk line of the Oktyabrskaya Railway, backed by the regional road network. There is no container liner service; for larger volumes, deeper draft and ice-free access, Murmansk some 280 kilometres to the north is the natural alternative. For regional bulk and general-cargo shipments, Kandalaksha is a solid if limited handling point.
