Cambodia's foreign trade leans almost entirely on a single gateway: Kampong Saom, officially Sihanoukville, the country's only deep-sea port, spread across roughly 125 hectares. Sheltered in the Bay of Kampong Som with naturally deep water protected by offshore islands, it serves as the central node for the nation's imports and exports. Container throughput passed the 1 million TEU mark for the first time in 2024, with capacity set to reach about 2.6 million TEU by 2030. In August 2024 a new 11.5 m-deep container terminal (around USD 40 million) entered service, expanding handling capacity. A JICA-financed deep-water expansion (about USD 547 million) is intended to accommodate vessels of up to roughly 120,000 dwt by the end of the decade, opening the door to direct ocean services; until then shallower depths cap ship sizes and much cargo is transhipped via regional hubs such as Singapore or Cai Mep. Customs clearance runs through a dedicated customs and excise branch inside the port compound, typically taking about one day. Hinterland links to Phnom Penh use National Road 4, the new expressway and a rail connection. For barge and feeder traffic the Phnom Penh river port is an alternative, while large direct calls still rely on regional transhipment hubs.
