Steel and iron ore, not containers, define Kamaishi Ko on the Sanriku coast of Iwate Prefecture. A centre of Japan's iron and steel industry since the 19th century and home to a Nippon Steel works, the town's port leads freight turnover in the Tohoku region. It imports roughly 1.8 million tonnes of iron ore and about 625,000 tonnes of coking coal a year, while exporting some 114,000 tonnes of steel products; fishing and grain handling via dolphin berths add further traffic. The deep natural harbour was rebuilt after the 2011 tsunami and offers around 14 m alongside. Hinterland access runs by road and the Kamaishi rail line into the interior. For containerised liner cargo, regional shippers generally turn to Sendai-Shiogama or the major Kanto ports of Tokyo and Yokohama. Kamaishi Ko is therefore an industrial bulk port focused firmly on raw-material imports and steel exports.
