Blue Star Ferries, Dodekanisos Seaways and several smaller operators make the harbour at Pothia, on the Dodecanese island of Kalymnos, primarily a ferry and passenger gateway, linking it to Piraeus and to Kos, Rhodes, Leros and Patmos. A mole roughly 0.2 nm long shelters the basin even in strong northerly winds. On the freight side the port handles mainly dry cargoes and fish, plus vehicles via RoRo; there is no container or deep-sea liner service. The island is supplied through breakbulk and ferry freight from the Greek mainland. For containerised or larger consignments, Piraeus, Kos and Rhodes are the practical alternatives.
