Kakogawa is best understood as a steelworks port rather than a general cargo harbour. Its quays exist primarily to feed Kobe Steel's (Kobelco) Kakogawa Works, which since 1969 has stood on reclaimed land on the Seto Inland Sea and accounts for roughly 80 percent of the group's steel output. Inbound iron ore and coking coal and outbound finished steel and LPG dominate the traffic; the wider Higashi-Harima port complex moves on the order of 30 million tonnes a year. Kobe Steel operates its own east and west wharves for these bulk flows. This is an industrial bulk facility, not a container port with international liner calls. Forwarders needing container or general international shipping should look to Kobe or Himeji nearby.
