Spruce pulp baled for Michigan's Sears-Roebuck catalogues once moved across the dock at Kagawong, the cargo that gave this Manitoulin Island village its purpose after a stone mill opened on Mudge Bay in 1925. Sitting on Lake Huron's North Channel, it was a regular call on the old "Turkey Trail" coastal trade. That commercial chapter has closed: the mill is now a heritage museum, and the harbour serves recreational and visiting boats rather than freight. Real regional cargo runs through Little Current and, for Great Lakes bulk, the mainland ports of Goderich and Owen Sound.
