Unlike Singapore's box terminals, Jurong Island handles almost no containers — it is the city-state's energy and chemicals complex. Reclaimed from several islets into roughly 3,500 hectares in the southwest, it ranks among the world's top three oil-refining centres, processing over 1.5 million barrels of crude per day. Operators here include ExxonMobil (a refinery of around 592,000 barrels per day), Shell, BASF and Chevron Phillips, running refineries and petrochemical plants; ExxonMobil started up its Singapore Resid Upgrade Project in 2025 to convert heavy residue into cleaner fuels and lubricant base stocks. Jurong Port's tank terminals, including the Universal Terminal with 2.33 million cubic metres of storage and 15 jetties — two for VLCCs — handle crude, refined products and chemicals, with berths taking tankers up to 180,000 DWT. Forwarders with general cargo or containers should instead use PSA's terminals at Tuas and Pasir Panjang. For liquid bulk and chemical dangerous goods, however, few places in Asia offer denser infrastructure.
