A single-point mooring (SPM) buoy about two nautical miles offshore, backed by some 536,000 cubic metres of tank storage, forms the Jose Ignacio terminal on Uruguay's Atlantic coast. Known as Terminal del Este, the buoy discharges crude tankers of up to 150,000 dwt – and up to 200,000 dwt in favourable conditions – in around 18.6 m of water. A 160 km pipeline pumps the crude to the country's only refinery, La Teja near Montevideo. Operated by the state energy company ANCAP, the terminal is dedicated solely to crude-oil supply. It handles no containers, breakbulk or RoRo. Forwarders with such cargo use the Port of Montevideo instead.
