Jijel is the smaller, older harbour of its namesake city on Algeria's eastern Mediterranean coast, not to be confused with the deep-water terminal next door. Sheltered by a breakwater, its quays of around 7.3 m depth mainly handle general and bulk cargo for regional supply, with only limited bunkering and repair services. The region's heavy lifting happens about 10 km away at Djen Djen (DZ DJE), where DP World runs a container terminal scaling toward 2 million TEU plus RoRo and multipurpose berths, with drafts up to 18.2 m. Good links to the East–West Highway and an expanding rail network connect the hinterland's mining, cement and manufacturing sites. Forwarders with containers or rolling stock therefore route through Djen Djen, while Jijel plays a complementary role in local breakbulk. Bejaia and Skikda offer further alternatives for international liner traffic.
