Seven deep-water berths capable of handling vessels up to 100,000 dwt define Jiangyin's role on the lower Yangtze rather than any container ambition. Set on the river's south bank in Jiangsu Province, the port moved around 370 million tonnes of cargo in 2023, overwhelmingly dry bulk and industrial materials. Iron ore, coal, steel and construction materials dominate the traffic, with a newer bulk terminal of two 100,000-tonne berths rated at about 7 million tonnes a year. The port functions chiefly as a transfer point between seagoing ships, river barges and the industries lining the Yangtze corridor. Hinterland flows rely on road, rail and especially inland-waterway connections upriver toward Nanjing and Wuhan. Shippers needing containerised export capacity generally use the nearby deep-sea ports of Shanghai or Ningbo-Zhoushan, or Taicang. In short, Jiangyin is an industrial bulk port whose strength lies in dry commodities, not boxes.
