Eleven floating-roof tanks holding around five million barrels and two single buoy moorings define Halul Island's purpose: exporting Qatar Marine crude. Some 80 km north-east of Doha, the island gathers output from the offshore Idd El-Shargi, Maydan Mahzam and Bul Hanine fields and loads it straight into tankers, with QatarEnergy as operator. Apart from crude carriers, commercial vessels essentially do not call. There are no container, breakbulk or routine customs facilities on the island. Cargo bound for Qatar moves instead through Hamad Port, the country's main multipurpose and container gateway. Halul is a tightly specialised oil-export point, not a freight or supply harbour.
