With 8.17 million TEU in financial year 2025/26 (+11.94% year on year) and 4.40 million TEU in the first half of 2026 (+13.6%), Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva, IN NSA) is India's leading major-port container gateway near Mumbai — and, ranked 21st among the global top 30 container ports in H1 2026, the world's fastest-growing port in that tier. January 2026 brought a new monthly record of 737,682 TEU. Five terminals share the workload: Nhava Sheva FreePort Terminal (NSFT); DP World's NSICT and NSIGT (NSICT's 30-year concession expires in 2027 and DP World has formally applied for an extension); APM Terminals' GTI terminal; and PSA's BMCT, planned at 4.8 million TEU capacity with 2,000 m quay. Rail access via the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor and a wide network of inland container depots (ICDs) ties the port deep into northern India, including Delhi and the NCR. Cargo is predominantly consumer and manufactured goods in containers, plus reefer and project loads, with customs clearance through India's ICEGATE system on site. Total annual TEU capacity stands at 7.3 million; the port targets 10 million TEU by 2027 — backed by a USD 131 million loan — which would make it India's first port at that level. Draught constraints push the very largest vessels toward other ports, which is why the new Vadhvan deep-water project is being developed to the north (Phase 1 due 2029). For shippers, Mundra, Hazira and Pipavav are the main west-coast alternatives.
