Handling a record 7.05 million TEU in 2024 — up about 11% year on year — Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva, IN NSA) is India's leading major-port container gateway, across the harbour from Mumbai. The complex is split among several terminals: the former JNPCT, now privatised as Nhava Sheva FreePort Terminal (NSFT); NSICT and NSIGT run by DP World; the GTI terminal of APM Terminals; and PSA's BMCT, which sharply expanded capacity. Rail access via the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor and a wide network of inland container depots ties the port deep into northern India, including Delhi and the NCR, alongside dense road links. Cargo is predominantly consumer and manufactured goods in containers, with reefer and project shipments too, while customs clearance runs through India's ICEGATE system on site. Operating above 90% of capacity, the port aims to become India's first to handle 10 million TEU by 2027. Draught constraints push the very largest vessels toward other ports, which is why the new Vadhvan deep-water project is being developed to the north (Phase 1 due by 2029). For shippers, Mundra, Hazira and Pipavav are the main west-coast alternatives, yet Nhava Sheva remains the backbone of containerised foreign trade on India's western seaboard.
