Dozens of private terminals line the Gulf of İzmit on the Sea of Marmara, roughly 100 km east of Istanbul, forming one of Turkey's densest port clusters. Together the facilities move around 72 million tonnes a year, ranking among Europe's busiest cargo locations by tonnage, with container throughput near 2.5 million TEU. DP World Yarımca anchors the container side, Yılport Solventaş is the country's largest liquid-bulk terminal, and Euroports specialises in forest products and general cargo. The terminals handle dry and liquid bulk, containers, breakbulk and roll-on/roll-off traffic, serving Kocaeli's automotive, petrochemical and refining industries. Road motorways and rail connect the bay to Istanbul and the Anatolian interior. For additional container capacity in the Marmara region, shippers can also use Ambarlı near Istanbul and Gemlik.
