Iwakuni Ko (JP IWK) is best understood as an industrial port rather than a container gateway, built around the chemical, paper and petroleum plants of the Setonaikai industrial belt near Iwakuni and neighbouring Otake. It lies at the eastern edge of Yamaguchi Prefecture on the western shore of Hiroshima Bay. Expressway, the JR Sanyo line and Seto Inland Sea coastal routes provide hinterland access, with Hiroshima about 40 km away. For forwarders, Iwakuni suits chemicals, petroleum, paper, tank-borne dangerous goods and project or bulk shipments, while pure container volume is better consolidated via Hiroshima or Kobe.
