Greece's bauxite trade gave Itea its commercial purpose: ore from the Parnassós and Gkióna ranges has long moved out through a private loading jetty on the north shore of the Gulf of Corinth. Operating as an open roadstead, the port mainly handles dry bulk, with local olives and olive products adding to the export mix. Itea is equally known as the maritime gateway to ancient Delphi, drawing cruise and excursion calls alongside its cargo work. It does not handle container or significant breakbulk traffic, and hinterland links run by road. Forwarders with boxed or customs-intensive shipments turn instead to Piraeus, Greece's largest port, or to Patras for Adriatic-bound flows. Itea thus remains a specialised bulk and tourism port with a clearly bounded freight role.
