Operated by the EMAP port authority and served by majors such as Vale, Bunge and Petrobras, Itaqui is the largest public port in northern and northeastern Brazil and ranks fourth nationwide. Its nine berths, with depths of 12 to 19 metres, specialise in solid bulk — soybeans, corn, pig iron, manganese — alongside liquid bulk including petroleum products and LPG, plus fertilisers, coal and cellulose. The Tegram grain terminal channels Cerrado farm exports that reach the coast via the North–South and Carajás railways. Container volumes are secondary, at roughly 100,000 TEU a year. Immediately north, Vale's Ponta da Madeira terminal ships iron ore railed some 900 km from the Carajás mines. With deep berths suited to Capesize and Panamax bulkers and tankers, Itaqui is a bulk and liquid hub rather than a box terminal; for containerised freight in the region, shippers turn to Pecém and Suape.
