Frozen meat and poultry, wood, ceramics, paper and textiles from Santa Catarina's industrial hinterland move out through Itajaí (BR ITJ), Brazil's second-busiest container complex after Santos. Set on the Itajaí-Açu river, the port works in tandem with the privately run Portonave terminal across the water in Navegantes, the pair handling roughly 1.1 million TEU a year. The public quay stretches about 1,030 m with four berths and around 14 m of draught, rated for up to some 558,000 TEU annually. After APM Terminals' 22-year lease ended in late 2022, JBS Terminais took over operations in October 2024 under a transitional contract and invested more than BRL 130 million in the relaunch; a definitive concession of over 30 years is due to be tendered at auction. Reefer cargo is central here, so reefer plug capacity is substantial, while inbound flows include machinery, chemicals and consumer goods for the Santa Catarina manufacturing belt. Customs clearance is handled on site, including digital import and export procedures, and hinterland links run predominantly by road. When draught limits or congestion bite, shippers can shift to Navegantes/Portonave, São Francisco do Sul or Paranaguá.
