Itacoatiara owes its place in global trade to Brazil's soy frontier: it is the Amazon outlet where grain from Mato Grosso reaches ocean shipping. Sitting where the Madeira meets the Amazon, about 108 nautical miles downriver from Manaus, the town hosts Amaggi's private Hermasa terminal. Convoys of Mississippi-style barges descend from the river port of Porto Velho and discharge at a floating catamaran pier fitted with two ship-loaders, transferring soybeans, soymeal, soy oil and maize either into shore silos or straight into bulk carriers. Channel and pier depths of roughly 11 m and 9.4 m allow sizeable bulkers to call, and Amaggi also runs a yard here for its tug and barge fleet. This is a dedicated agribulk export port, not a container gateway. For boxed or customs-heavy cargo in Amazonas, the Manaus free-trade-zone port is the relevant alternative, with Belém/Vila do Conde serving deep-sea trade near the river mouth.
