# Islas Hormigas

The 1906 loss of the liner Sirio on these rocks is why most people have heard of the Islas Hormigas — a cluster of uninhabited islets about 4 km east of Cabo de Palos in Murcia, Spain, with no quay, terminal or cargo handling of any kind and therefore no freight relevance. The shoals continue the cape as a submerged ridge and remain a navigational hazard, marked since 1864 by the Cabo de Palos lighthouse. The waters between cape and islets form the Cabo de Palos–Islas Hormigas marine reserve of roughly 19 km², where fishing and navigation are tightly restricted. Ocean freight for the region is handled at Cartagena with its adjoining Escombreras bulk and industrial harbour some 25 km to the south-west, or at Alicante, which are also the points of customs clearance for imports and exports.
