More than 1,652 metres of quay and roughly 1 million TEU of annual capacity make İskenderun, operated by LimakPort, one of the principal cargo gateways on Turkey's eastern Mediterranean coast. Privatised in 2011 under a 36-year concession, the terminal began container operations in 2013 and is being expanded toward about 1.3 million TEU. It handles containers, general cargo, dry and liquid bulk, RoRo, and project and industrial cargo for south-east Anatolia, the eastern Mediterranean and Middle East trades. Heavy industry sets the tone: the neighbouring Isdemir integrated steelworks generates strong steel and raw-material flows, alongside coal and other industrial goods. The hinterland extends to the Gaziantep industrial belt and is served by road and rail. As a customs and import point, İskenderun clears international cargo for southern Turkey. For pure container volume, Mersin is the region's larger hub, while the Isdemir works port and AssanPort complement local capacity. Forwarders favour İskenderun above all for steel, bulk, RoRo and project shipments bound for the south-east.
