Pulp, paper and timber define the working life of Ishinomaki Ko, the industrial and fishing port at the mouth of the Kitakami River in Miyagi Prefecture. Its piers, dredged to around 12.5 m, mainly handle woodchip imports feeding Nippon Paper's mills, alongside pulp, sawn timber, fertiliser and steel, while the city remains a major marine-products processing centre. Containerised liner traffic is minimal here: since 2012 Ishinomaki has formed part of the unified Sendai-Shiogama-Ishinomaki international port, where box volumes move through the Sendai and Shiogama terminals. The quays were rebuilt after the 2011 Tohoku tsunami, with woodchip carriers returning to the Minamihama pier soon afterwards. Road and rail link the northern Miyagi hinterland to Sendai. Forwarders therefore route boxes and liner cargo via Sendai-Shiogama, reserving Ishinomaki for bulk, breakbulk and project shipments.
