Serving the Sapporo metropolitan area, Hokkaido's largest consumer market, Ishikari Bay New Port (JPISI) is the island's principal base for international distribution. The port is organised into five zones: construction goods and metal scrap in the East, energy products such as LNG, LPG, kerosene and gasoline in the Centre, the gantry-equipped Bannaguro international container base, steel, rice and fishery products at Takurawa, and general cargo and wood chips in the West. Foreign-trade container routes link the port with South Korea and China, though box throughput is regional in scale at roughly 47,000 TEU. The adjoining Ishikari LNG terminal, with four tanks totalling about 840,000 m³ and around 4.5 million tonnes a year of capacity, makes the port an energy supply point for northern Japan, and a large gas-fired power plant is being built on site. Road and rail carry cargo inland toward Sapporo. For forwarders, Ishikari suits Hokkaido-bound import and export flows, project and bulk cargo, while major deep-sea services more often call at Tomakomai or Honshu's larger ports.
