Around two million tonnes of cargo a year pass through Ipswich, the Associated British Ports facility on the River Orwell that has been the UK's leading grain export port for many years. Serving the arable heartland of East Anglia, the Ipswich Grain Terminal loads agribulk straight from silo via a telescopic shiploader at over 1,000 tonnes per hour. Beyond grain the port handles fertiliser, cement and construction aggregates. In 2022 it exported roughly 631,000 tonnes of agricultural commodities, about 23% of the UK major-ports market share. Access is through a tidal barrier that holds water levels in the dock regardless of the Orwell's tides.
