Opened to foreign trade in 1922 as Shikoku's first such port, Imabari Ko sits on Japan's Seto Inland Sea and owes its character to industry rather than line haul. It is the home of Imabari Shipbuilding, Japan's largest shipbuilding group, and the centre of the celebrated Imabari towel trade, which accounts for roughly 60 percent of national output. The port handles shipyard-related cargo, coastal traffic and breakbulk, and runs numerous ferry links to the surrounding islands and the mainland. A channel depth of about 7.9 m and a cargo pier around 12 m define the vessels it can take; it is not a deep-sea container gateway. The hinterland is reached via the Shimanami Kaido bridges and Ehime's road network, while larger container volumes are better served by nearby Matsuyama or by Kobe and Osaka.
