Five hours of open water separate Cap-aux-Meules from the nearest mainland road network, and that crossing is what defines the port: the harbour on Cap aux Meules Island (Grindstone Island) is the only commercial cargo point of Quebec's Îles de la Madeleine in the Gulf of St Lawrence. The Coopérative de transport maritime et aérien (CTMA) runs the year-round RoPax link to Souris, Prince Edward Island, with MV Madeleine II — about 15,600 GT, 139 m long, up to 750 passengers and more than 200 vehicles.
