One commodity dominates Iharana, the northeastern Madagascan port also known as Vohémar: vanilla, alongside cloves and lychee from the surrounding SAVA region, one of the world's leading vanilla-growing areas. As the only properly equipped commercial port in SAVA, it concentrates the export of these high-value agricultural goods. Shallow water forces larger ships to work at anchorage offshore, while coastal vessels carry cargo in cabotage to Toamasina for transhipment onto deep-sea services. There is no dedicated container line or full customs terminal here; handling centres on bagged goods, breakbulk and limited reefer volumes. Roads link the port to its agricultural hinterland but are seasonally constrained. For intercontinental shipments, Toamasina remains the decisive gateway, complemented by Antsiranana in the far north.
