For only about five ice-free months each year, Igarka handles cargo some 675 kilometres up the Yenisei River, roughly 100 km north of the Arctic Circle. Founded in 1929 as a sawmill settlement, the port specialises in transshipping logs and sawn timber as breakbulk onto vessels bound for Western Europe via the Northern Sea Route. It is not a container facility, and the cargo-pier depth of about 7.9 m limits the ships it can accept. The town has no railway, so the hinterland is served only by the river and by air. Shippers needing general-cargo or container handling should look to Dudinka, Murmansk or Arkhangelsk instead, all of which offer more capable, year-round options.
