At the head of the 114-km Portland Canal, where the Salmon River meets tidewater, Hyder is a tiny Alaskan settlement just across the line from Stewart, British Columbia. It has no commercial port of its own; bulk, heavy-lift and RO/RO cargo is handled at Stewart, Canada's northernmost ice-free port, which offers a barge terminal, a bulk loader and road links to BC and Alberta. No container liner service or seaborne customs clearance operates at Hyder itself. Regional freight therefore moves through Stewart, with Ketchikan, about 121 km to the southwest, the nearest US commercial port.
