In North Iceland's fishing economy, Húsavík on Skjálfandi Bay is best known as the country's whale-watching capital, a trade launched from this harbour in 1995. Commercially the port remains a fishing and seafood-processing base rather than a container or general-cargo gateway, and customs clearance for boxed freight is not handled here. Heavy industrial cargo uses the deep-water port at Bakki about three kilometres away, which serves the PCC silicon-metal plant opened in 2018, importing raw materials and exporting product. Containerised shipments for the region route instead through Akureyri or the carrier hubs at Reykjavík (Sundahöfn). With no railways in Iceland, all hinterland movement is by road.
