Limestone, construction aggregates and grain are the cargoes that keep Huron working today, a small Lake Erie port in Ohio with a deep bulk-shipping heritage. From 1882 the docks served the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railroad as an outlet for iron ore and coal, and a grain elevator later shipped Great Lakes and international grain cargoes. The former lime plant, which turned shiploads of limestone into hydrated lime for steelmaking, was bought by Carmeuse in 2018 and soon closed, but regional stone and aggregate volumes remain significant. Huron offers no container liner or Ro-Ro services; it is purely a Great Lakes dry-bulk harbour. Rail and road tie the port to northwest Ohio's quarries and industry. Shippers needing containers or breakbulk use Cleveland or Toledo instead.
