Commissioned in 1976 as the Hunterston Ore Terminal, this Ayrshire site was built by British Steel to land iron ore and coal for the Ravenscraig steelworks. Its deep-water berths — handling vessels up to 443 m long with drafts around 23 m — made it one of the deepest ports in the UK, moving roughly 5.5 million tonnes a year, latterly coal for Longannet power station. When Longannet closed, the terminal shut in 2016 and its structures were cleared from 2019. Operated by Clydeport (Peel Ports), the site no longer runs as a scheduled cargo port and is being repurposed for heavy-lift, offshore wind and oil-and-gas decommissioning work. Container traffic is not confirmed here; boxes on the Clyde move through the Greenock container terminal instead. For dry bulk and project cargo, Hunterston's exceptional depth remains its defining asset.
