Unlike a multipurpose harbour, Huasco is a dedicated bulk and energy port built around iron ore: it ships the pellet output of Compañía Minera del Pacífico (CMP) from Chile's Huasco valley. Its two terminals divide the work — Guacolda II exports roughly 4 million tonnes of iron ore pellets a year from the Los Colorados and El Algarrobo mines, while Guacolda I imports about 1 million tonnes of coal and petroleum products. The Guacolda II ore berth accepts vessels up to 250,000 DWT at around 22 m draught, with some 93 calls a year in total. No container or conventional general-cargo services operate here. The hinterland is the mining and processing complex around Huasco and Vallenar, linked by road and dedicated industrial infrastructure. For containers or breakbulk, forwarders use Coquimbo, Caldera or the larger ports of San Antonio and Valparaíso.
