Minerals, steel, cement, timber and petroleum and chemical products make up the bulk of what moves through Huangpu, the historic port district of Guangzhou on the Pearl River and a major dry-bulk handling point in South China. Its older terminal offers ten berths along roughly 1,800 metres of quay, operated by the Guangzhou Port Group, and also handles containers alongside heavy breakbulk. Water depth limits calls to vessels of around 20,000 DWT with a 9-metre draught, so larger boxships use the deeper downstream ports of Xinsha and Nansha. Road, rail and inland waterways tie Huangpu tightly into the Pearl River Delta hinterland. Forwarders needing deep-water container liner services therefore route via Nansha. For regional industrial and project cargo, however, Huangpu remains a central facility.
